Chapter Two
Ima quite enjoyed the train ride from Chicago to Burlington, Wyoming. She was sure that she was the first person from Mokena to ever ride the iron horse and the reason for her adventure west was even more thrilling.
Upon arriving back home from the final farewell to Timothy Merriweather Ima composed her letter to Mr. Yates expressing her deep interest in his offer and briefly explaining her situation. She gave a short description of herself. Very short mentioning only that she had no abnormalities and nothing considered unusual in her appearance.
When her invitation to come to Big Horn was received she wasted no time packing her things and leaving her home behind.
“It isn’t fitting of a lady to go off on such a fool’s journey and without a chaperone!” her mother cried inhaling smelling salts every few seconds.
“I forbid this tactic you are taking, Ima. It is disgraceful.” Her father, Charles, barked. “You will not be happy. I can guarantee you that.”
“Oh, but you were so sure I’d be happy with the no account, pie-eater Timothy Merriweather!”
Mrs. Tillsworth gasped.
“Now, you wait just a moment, young lady.” Charles puffed out his chest as if getting ready for a bout. “You can’t talk like that in this house. You apologize to your mother.”
Ima looked at her father and then her mother.
“I will not.” She said quietly. “I’m leaving, and you cannot stop me. But I do hope you’ll wish me well. And that maybe, someday, you’ll find it in your heart to forgive me for all my shortcomings.”
“Ima, won’t you please discuss this with us?” her mother pleaded.
“There isn’t anything to discuss. I’ve made up my mind.”
“You’ve made up your mind?” Charles hissed. Ima had never seen her father so angry. But she squared her shoulders and braced herself. “If you step out that door you will no longer be welcome here.”
“Charles, please!” Mrs. Tillsworth stood from her sitting chair. She reached out to Charles but pulled back as if he had become hot to the touch.
“I haven’t been welcome here for some time now, father. I would think you’d find it a great relief that I no longer require your constant attention.” Ima picked up her suitcase. It was a bulging bag sewn together from dozens, maybe hundreds of scraps of fabric to make the most beautiful mosaic design. She had stitched it together herself over many nights never really knowing why. Where would she ever go? Why would she ever need such an elaborate travel bag? Yet here she was, stepping out of her father’s house for the very last time, carrying everything she owned in the world in this suitcase.
The whole exchanged seemed like years ago instead of days. But here she was waiting at the train platform for Mr. Noah Yates to come and fetch her.
The platform was a long wooden walkway raised about four feet off the ground. After the train had pulled away and her fellow travelers had disappeared on their own adventures Ima saw there were only a few carriages loitering about, none fitting the description of Mr.
